Sea Fit Therapy brings therapy and the aquatic world together, a synergetic culmination of the long held values, passions, and lived experience of founder Heli Murray.
ABOUT HELI With a close affinity with the natural world and a desire to make a difference, Heli completed a BA in Outdoor Education in her early 20s and worked leading wilderness education adventure expeditions. After becoming a mother, Heli's focus expanded to include a desire to understand the joys and challenges of pregnancy, birth and parenting, and a quest to gain knowledge and tools to support others to maximise the growth potential inherent in this life experience. |
Heli is a qualified counsellor, birth educator and doula (birth attendant) with over twenty years experience supporting people through challenging transitions. With Masters Degrees in Social Ecology and Counselling, her own life experience, and an innate acuity for empathic connection, Heli is uniquely versed in assisting others to feel safe, turn down the outside noise in order to listen to their inner world, and develop strategies, skills and perspectives to enhance their own life and the lives of those they love.
To both her personal life and work, Heli brings a life long love of and engagement with Water.
Growing up swimming and canoeing down the Murray River, Heli quickly discovered her love of the Ocean. Sea Kayaking from Cairns to Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, around Flinders Island in Bass Straight, guiding sea kayak trips in Fiji and the Solomons.
Open water ocean swimming became a passion after moving to Byron Bay with her young sons.
When her sons joined Nippers, Heli ventured into Surf Life Saving, initially to provide water safety to support her boys, later going on to develop new skills in surf swimming, board and ski paddling, completing the iconic Coolangatta Gold 7 times, and winning various state national and world Surf life Saving titles.

Realising she wasn't "too old" to be happy and pursue a goal, and simply wanting to experience all that water, Heli trained for and completed the gruelling Molokai to Ohau World Paddle Board Championship in Hawaii, at age 48 placing second in the open womens' category in a cohort of 18 to 28 year olds.
Heli then applied her skills and passion to become a qualified Lifeguard, combining her desire to be of service and help others feel safe, with her love the Ocean (and not needing to wear shoes to work !)

Freediving became another of Heli's water passions. Long fascinated by the grace of people who move seemingly effortlessly under water unencumbered by equipment and completely in contact with nature and the present, backed by her belief "if they can, I can, I just need to learn how", Heli began her Freediving journey, literally adding another depth to her relationship with the Ocean and its therapeutic gifts.
As an adjunct to her work and passions, Heli became an Apnea Survival Instructor, Cold Water Immersion Instructor, and is undertaking Oxygen Advantage Instructor certification.

Beyond work, training, competition, community, and pleasure, the greatest gifts Heli has received from her relationship with the water have been to her own emotional, relational and psychological and physical well-being.
ABOUT SEA FIT THERAPY
Connection with Water, observing sensing and moving with and in response to the rhythm form and shape of it's flow, provides an enduring resource to release tension, dissipate stress and let go of fear, facilitating insight and awareness, reframing of thoughts, rediscovery of joy and appreciation, and a return to the essence of being.
Utilising the breath, the master key to the autonomic nervous system, shifts emotional mental and physiological states towards functional calm, connection with self and others, and greater capacity to respond in alignment with values.
The practice of using breath and awareness to manage the discomfort of a deliberately applied stressor facilitates application of these skills to manage the un-chosen stressors of every day life.
It is from this knowledge and lived experience, and the desire to support others to tap into their own essence, that Sea Fit Therapy has emerged.
On the surface, Sea Fit Therapy teaches and reinforces the skills and awareness required to navigate the aquatic world, breathe better, and manage chosen stressors.
At a more profound level, by bringing a therapeutic approach to aquatic exploration, adventure, fun and challenge, Sea Fit Therapy facilitates the transfer of these skills and awareness to optimise emotional and relational health and wellbeing, and support others to Love the Lives they Live.
